Oviedo Vision Screenings vs. Eye Exams: What is the Difference?

Regular vision tests ensure you have the clearest vision possible. These exams are critical for patients who wear prescription eyeglasses or contacts. Our Oviedo optometrist recommends that these exams be conducted on an annual basis to confirm the correct prescription. Comprehensive eye exams are different from vision screenings. While a family physician may conduct a vision screening, screening can only indicate that additional exams are needed. Comprehensive eye exams carefully test all aspects of your vision. These exams, performed by qualified eye doctors, test for refractive errors and other vision problems, including amblyopia, strabismus (cross-eyed), eye teaming problems, eye focusing problems (including presbyopia in older adults), and eye diseases like glaucoma, which has no symptoms in the early stages.

Eye Exams at Trinity Eye Associates in Oviedo

When you stop by Trinity Eye Associates for an eye exam you will meet with our Dynamic Duo Oviedo optometrists, Dr. Jill Ellison and Dr. Don Ellison, who will ask you questions about any symptoms or issues you are experiencing, medications you are currently taking, your work environment, your overall health, and specific vision concerns. Family history and previous eye or vision conditions will also be discussed during this part of the examination. Our doctors will then use this information when evaluating your vision and determining whether you are considered to be “at risk” for specific vision conditions, like glaucoma, which may require special screening and we can also provide for you.

Screening for Glaucoma & Macular Degeneration

Did you know that many serious vision conditions; including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration, do not show obvious symptoms until a more advanced stage? Annual Comprehensive eye exams are the most effective way for diagnosing these serious vision conditions and taking immediate steps to protect patients from irreversible vision loss. During your eye exam, Our optometrist will also check for early signs of other vision conditions and diseases by looking at your eye’s blood vessels and retina. In some instances, our eye doctor will be able to tell if you are developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or other problems.

Pediatric Vision Exams

All children should have a full vision exam before beginning kindergarten/first grade, and then every two years thereafter, or as recommended by our eye care professionals. Early pediatric screenings can detect vision problems that affect a child’s performance in school and correct these problems as early as possible.
